50 years of Teaching

Joan Murray, British Columbia

            Joan has been involved with Highland Dancing since she was ten years old.   As a member of Mary IsdaleMacNab’s BC Highland Lassiesperformed throughout North America with the Royal Marine Tattoo and before Queen Elizabeth II at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

            Joan became a member of the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance in 1964 and the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing Judges Panel in 1965. She is amember of ScotDance Canada/BC and the BC Highland Dancing Association.   Fraser Valley Highland Dancing presented her with a Life Membership.

            The Joan Murray School of Dance was opened in 1964. She taught in Burnaby, New Westminster and Cloverdale. Her dancers enjoyed the Highland Heritage and formed wonderful memoriesand friendships.    As Director/Choreographer of the very successful and well know Tartan Pride Highland Dance Team, Joan produced many outstanding group numbers.

The Tartan Pride performed with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band and the Delta Police Pipe Band.   They also toured with ‘Blackthorn’.   Joan guided the Team as they performed World Wide. Their adventures took them to London, Scotland, France, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Netherlands, Alaska and California.

For many, many years Joan could be found running the Used Costume Table at the FVHDA. To top this off she is also known for the beautiful kilts she makes.

Since Joan retired, there is a large void in British Columbia that cannot be filled.
